I agree with you, that the 'strokes' of the pen/ink seem more like it would have been made with a fountain pen (as it would of course have to be, as the ballpoint pen wasnt invented until later, which we know), it just seems like a very 'sharp' signature IMO.
There could of course be a reason for that, as you state (lid owner a desk jockey having rarely worn the helmet).
