DRP wasn't printed on some of those early dated 1931, like this one. maybe the patent wasn't even done yet.
I have seen some examples without date and DRP (as yours).
I have one example without DRP yet stamped 1931.
And of course DRP and 1931 together.

I would agree. It makes sense that these were just prior to the patent and possibly the official adoption as the M31. The different combinations of observed stamping certainly makes it fun to research.
