M40 Double Decal Beaded Luftschutz Combat Police Helmet - Medium Grey Paint - EF62 Lot # 31366
This was a gun show pickup in the early '90's. It is a Double Decal Beaded Luftschutz Combat Police helmet, complete with unmarked chin strap and late war cloth liner. It was reissued several times, as is apparent from the repaint and multiple layers of decals. In the last reissue a smooth medium grey paint was applied to the exterior of the shell. The interior retains the original factory applied dark blue paint. Based upon the second excerpt from the Baer bible that I included, it is fair to assume that the last reissue was in late 1944, but what I like is that the last Police Adler is UN-bordered, when it would be expected to be a bordered bird at that stage of the War. It is a small shell, an EF62, but the liner is still a bit undersized, so the construction methods and materials can be seen, including the method of the attachment of the chinstrap to the liner band. When these beaded helmets are posted there is sometimes a debate about the reason for the "bead", so I also added a page from the Baer treatise about that. I personally accept his explanation. Anyway, here it is. Hope you like it. Jim G.

Poor old Luftschutz police got the dud beaded helmets and the field police the good bullet proof ones ....... doesn't seem fair?
There was often as much debris falling from the sky as flying around the battlefield.
