Luftwaffe M40 Q64 is my favorite kind of helmet. This one has a descent decal too, and the paint pattern has a cool camo look to it.

Is it a multi layer overpaint that has been removed to reveal the eagle and much of the original grey? It is the only way I can make sense of where the decal sits in relation to the finish and condition of it and the helmet. Don't get me wrong, I like the lid - just doing a forensic in my mind ( I think we all do when we see helmets )

Also thought it a bit odd that the eagle seems to sit on top of the paint.
I like it too - but what Dan says above, just being cautious.........

The light green paint goes over the eagle in places like top of leg and head and the light grey is painted around the eagle , when in hand it is easier to see but with my iPhone not very clear I'm afraid. Why the top coats have worn like this I do not know. Also in the places were the decal is worn through the paint colour under is the darker grey same as the interior.

Upon examining larger pics, I can see paint going around the bird. Maybe someone
removed an overpaint, thinking or knowing it was post war applied ?

In any case, it looks a good eagle and is a nice helmet IMO.........!

We appear to have used the same type of helmet stands. Kitchen paper towel holders? It looks like you shortened yours?
