what do you mean by grave marker? do you mean the hole in the top is made on purpose?

When used as grave markers helmets were often secured to a headstone / cross of some description (usually a nail). As time went by, and the helmet was removed from the marker, the hole probably corroded and got bigger.

Have a look at the bullet strikes, 3 to the left temple (can tell by the way that the metal has folded) and 1 hole straight in the top...prob in the spot that the nail secured it.

I've got an old M42 ground dug lid from the Ukraine, you simply can't beat them for character! Besides, who's going to go to the trouble of faking a helmet that you can buy for under $50 when the rip-off artists are trying to bluff us with their high-quality repro items, resplendent with amazing decals and paintjobs? that being said, I'm sure someone is doing it...nature of the beast *sigh*
