My first steel helmet

Article about: Exterior he keeps dirty, interior was some mud from bad storage. The helmet was found in a barn, behind a wood pile. I wonder about the good condition, he lay more than 60 years there. Best,

    Hello,
this is my first steel helmet, usually I collect buckles. I think the maker is Quist, Q66.
Maybe I´ll want to clean the helmet, but how. First with tepidly water-suds and then with oil " balistol ", or only with water. Thanks for your opinions and tips.
    best,

DO NOT CLEAN IT. You will only damage the decals, paint and remaining liner parts. This will also destroy the value of the helmet and a lot of its collector appeal! Always leave things as they were found...

    Hi,
thanks for your opinions. I have clean only the interior with water-suds because there was some mud, anything else remains!

Yeh mate dont touch it any more......looks a lot better in a used condition and like the others have said has a better collector value. I myself love getting dirty looking helmets, shows they have a history, if you clean it too much you are removing its own personal "history" so to speak.

to bw honest mate, now that you have cleaned the inside it has lost some of its character........in my humble opinion

Most collectors like untouched, nicely aging examples. I agree with everyone else, don't clean it at all. Just wipe it down lightly with a soft cloth every now and then to clear the dust off.
