chris you are one of the luckiets finders i know fantastic item imo if its gonna damage the hessian sacking and wire then dont remove it unless you are itching to find out yourself!!

I will not look to see what is under it will just destroy it.
But it would be nice to know,plus the Hessian cloth is hard and in some area attach to the shell and to the chicken wire.

Nice helmets,did you say the one I have is not rusted?
It is totaly totaly rusted and comming a part .It is in very bad condition. This helmet is 100% original I did not pay for it and it is not for sell.My wife has my camera at the present time out of town but will post some.

if the wire was galvanised in any way itll stay fresher looking than some that wasnt i still say its original

You are totaly correct on that.
If I had bought it I would probably not be sure about any chicken wire helmet. But this was in the farmer barn and ask if I could have it.

those close ups really show the erosion on the galvanisation process with the flakyt greying in areas along with the sublte hues of the rust trying to breach it i love the pics they really bring out the detail
