I don't doubt that some have used acetone successfully but for me it's very unforgiving, slip and it's too late.
I would've previously never used paint stripper but then a colleague suggested this brand which I scoffed at initially. Once I tried it I was sold and because it's mild it only does what I need it to do and as you can see from the earlier images it left original patina which I know acetone will not.

I met up with Kateri today and saw the helmet in hand. The stripping of the white revealed the original green - same as the interior. Ended up a great save and a neat helmet!

I'm late here and probably not relevant at all but Wifey uses acetone free nail polish remover that worked well cleaning back a knife handle of old paint keeping most of the original patina. I shut up now.

There are those in the Northern hemisphere who think recovering abused helmets is a waste of effort - but for those of us in the south this is often the best we can get.
Australian forces were discouraged from bringing trophies back so pickings here have always been slim.....

Thanks Dan. I’ve often wondered why we have so few bring backs here. Such a damn Nanny state and even worse today.
