After talking to the guy I really dont think he knows what it is worth.
I think he is relying on me to tell him what its worth.
He said the helmet was pulled from ebay due to the swastika.

There are sellers who just don't know what something is worth either, in which case you make an offer but build a case for your price by showing your not trying to take advantage of him by showing him fair market comparables. That is how you build trust and if the seller is fair you will arrive at a deal in no time.by anton67
Problem is that I can not find comparable helmets.
If the paint is period and the decal is period, what is it worth in this condition?
I am supposed to get photos tomorrow morning.
Not a lot of money. If a gun was put to my head to give a price I would probably say $250 but that's if a gun was put to my head. ;-)
That said the black paint in no way matches the liner or interior condition of the helmet. So to be honest I would try to find a normal LW M42 in better condition for a few dollars more.
Remember you have to sell this someday.
Hey,there mate,now i'm not an experienced collector like the others,but still i think i can give you a good piece of advice.
As i read above the chances of the paint being period are slim,so if i were you i would leave this one,as Doug and the others suggested.
A helmet like this can only give you temporary satisfaction,i'm telling you this from personal experience.
Now for finding a comparable helmet,if you look hard enough i'm sure you are going to find one.Recently i bought a decent M40 lufty (the only thing,the liner skin was deteriorated) and i paid 325 USD for it.

It's worth what you want to pay for it , as this topic has reached already two pages and it continues against the advise of good collectors I guess you just want it regardless of their input ?

Or, "its not about the money, its about preserving history."
That really doesn't tell me anything.
When I am asking what an item is worth, I am referring to fair market value.
What would the helmet sell for generally?
I do not have unlimited funds to spend on helmets so when I purchase an item I like to pay a price where I could comfortable make a few bucks if I ever go to sell it.
Because sometimes I am forced to sell items to buy others.
Secondly, I am not dead set on buying the helmet.
I want to find out if the black paint is period or not first.
I understand there is a slim chance and that is why I asked the guy for more photos.
Obviously if it is not period paint, I do not want it.

Just walk away, it's not worth the grief.
