To my eyes, the paint looks like normal aged paint. They can turn to a darker greyish brown in color given enough time and the various storage conditions. I actually like the ring of rust on this one from having another helmet stacked on top of it for years.

German helmets can be found in many varieties of colors, depending on the time period of issue, the branch of service, etc.

It's just I've never really seen a factory issue apple green m42. It's a EF M42 ND btw.

Its a good 'slate Grey' colour for a 1943 onwards helmet.
Hang onto your first if you can - it will always be special.
