Steel helmet??

Hi guys,my father bless him,keeps picking things up for me from carboots,i tell him not to but he doesnt listen. His "finds" this week are these items,any thoughts on them would be grateful.I know for sure the inside of the helmet is wrong,but what about the actual shell? I havent seen another one like it,with that strange slot at the front?,to hold a badge maybe?
