The adrian helmet also has a homemade hessian liner. I think it was a bit of individual inventiveness by the frenchie whose helmet it was.

Another of my hobbies is painting, I used oils on this repro helmet

It took an age to dry and I was nt impressed by the finish, so i painted over and added a french tricolour decal to denote the charlemagne legion.

Heres an unusual repro. It is meant to be a U.S. paratroopers helmet but the maker confused it with a british para and fallschimjager helmet and this is the result.

What on earth is that? It's like a Frankenstein helmet. I'm anxious to see what they've done with the liner(Hint hint)

It is not a repro. This is an example of a West German M71 paratrooper helmet.

Thanks for the correction, it did seem a very professional helmet and the liner is reminisent of a fallschimjagers. Best I read up on helmets before purchasing any more! I've only been collecting since xmas 11 and it clearly shows

If your going to paint repros please look at some of the restoration repaints that have been shown on here, no original helmets were or have been painted in oils, and as far as i know no repros either, it is a completely unnatural finish, and as you have stated it would be advisable to buy some very good reference books, it will save you a great deal of money in the future

The idea to paint in oils was not to faithfully represent a battle worn helmet, it was more a different medium to paint on. Obviously avid collectors take the hobby seriously and justly so, I like the social history behind the helmets, the fact some poor sod had to rely on this bit of kit to keep his head intact. I am uneasy about german militaria particularly national socialist militaria, so maybe its my way of having german helmets in my collection (which is 80% allied headwear) and not feeling like a traitor to my relatives who fought and some died because of a fascist despot. Anyway, enough of my own ravings, I will research more and thank all the people on this very interesting site for their input into my collection.
