It is a Spanish Modello Z. Take a look here:
Mannie Gentile: Combat Helmets of the 20th Century: Spanish M.42 "Modello Z" steel helmet
Thanks, but I owned a model Z m42 this is a M40 and the central rivets dont correspond with the model z they are lower and i imagine they are to fasten the D rings for the chinstrap.
I don't think this is a Spanish helmet either, I've not seen one yet that didn't have the front badge tab and the liner is incorrect for both the 42 and the later model (I think 76?)
Are there any maker marks/ stampings, etc?
I think this one is a BGS helmet perhaps?
Josh
Possibly a Finnish helmet. Finland modified these helmets with new liners.
Have a look at this site: German M-40 Steel Helmet used by Finnish Army
Cheers,
Emile
Well looking at it closer, I am not so sure of my identification. The fact that that are four large rivets that are functional and one that is not, is new to me. The chinstrap posts are something strange as well. Mysterious!

I'm not sure i'd have to ask.
Well, I thought it was Spanish. Now you guys have me stumped too!
