Urban legend?????

I've got a true story that is simply unbeleivable and for many years I thought it was an urban myth !. Shortly after the war in a Town called Grangemouth in Scotland several goods trains passed through the town on their way to a local foundry. The goods trains were loaded with firearms and other items taken from Germany, which were destined to be melted down !!.

Word soon got round what was on the trains, and there were story's of dockyard workers opening the wagons and removing weapons ... which were dumped or buried before the Police got wind of it. For years I'd heard these story's and thought it was just a myth. Then a couple of years ago I got talking to an old guy who started telling me about the trains !. Turns out when he was a kid, him and his mates got into one of the wagons while they were parked up and removed a load of knives and guns !. He described the knives as having some German writing engraved along the blade's ! ... and they were throwing them into an old wooden door !. Then they heard that the Police were looking into the theft of items from the trains, so the kids took 'armfulls' of the items they'd knicked and dumped them into a local 'Timber basin' a large area of water where they gather logs before shipping them out. This timber basin is still there ! but now has a car park on top of it ! .... makes you think what is under it !.

My grate aunties dad was in the home guard and one day a heinkel he111 crashed on the local moor beeing in the home guard he was first on the seen he managed to climb into the cock pit and ragg off the joy-stick-control-column (i have forgotten the name of it now ) it was the full length too and my auntie kept it for years on top of her cooker untill in the end she could not be botherd to keep it and threw it in the trash!!!

My Grate uncle Frank wich you will see below was on leave from the raf and watched the bomber come down he found the pilots in the trees hanging by there shoots he picked up one of there gloves and he remembers the fingers falling out of them (there is actually and article on this about the plane crash too)

But thats not the worst my grate uncle Jack was in the artillery that was at monte cassino and he was in north africa and in burma he had tons of medals but in the end he had to sell them as he fell on hard times what a shame.

BUT!!!!!

My grate uncle on my mum's side uncle Frank was in the raf in North Africa too he brought home an original mauser i cannot remember what type it was but one day he got a knock at the door and the old bill was stood there bold as brass claiming that he had a fire arm and they took it off him he never seen that again he captured that off a german soldier aswell.

My nanna used to have boxes of bomb shrapnel and Incendiary tail fins she threw them in the bin too.

A few years ago a little old Lady near here walked into the local police station with a BAR rifle ! ... her Husband had brought it back from the far east, and it had lain in her loft since ... That rifle must have been as big as her !

when my uncle was a kid back in the 50's he and his buddies quite regularly played war with original German helmets and m1's brought home by neighbors and relatives. i have seen old slide photos of him and his buddy's. guess what one of the helmets was ???? single decal Wehrmacht paratrooper helmet!!!!! i will see if i can get a copy of the slide from him!!!!!

My stepfather gave me an old Lee Enfield his uncle used in Italy when fighting with for the Canadians. I put it in the rafters in the basement. Later we finished the basement, I had forgotten about the rifle and the contractors put in a drop cieling down there covering the rifle.

Years later we had a flood and the disaster relief people put everything that was salvagable from the basement into the garage, including the rifle unbenownst to us. Of course, they said nothing about the rifle and I was busy travelling when the flood hit and had forgotten about the rifle altogether.

A few days later my neighbor rings the doorbell and I answer it, he is standing there holding the rifle in his hands. He proceeds to tell me he confiscated it from my 4 year old who was running around the streets playing war....with this rifle that nobody knew was in the garage. A little embarrasing to say the least. But at least I had the rifle back...lol.

when I was in fifth grade i went with my grand man to visit her fried in new jersey over the summer. Armed with $100 spending money we went to a community flee market. There was an old man (ww2 vet) who was selling artillery shells, dog tags, bayonets, iron crosses and other things for cheap. back then i didn't like military suff so i spent it all on legos that got thrown away a month later.

I used to know an elderley ww2 vet near my home town. One day he showed me a photo of some men burying a tank near some woodland. I know which woods it was buried near, I have heard a similar story about the same tank. I was only about 12 when I was told the story and shown the picture. I have spent years asking people who would have been alive when this tank was buried, and that lived close by, if they have know the story and only one person had. I will one day find it
When I was a bit younger, about 10 years old, I knew a lad who showed me a pond where his Grandfather had thrown his captured German weapons from the second world war. These were thrown away in the 1970's when the UK changed its gun laws. One of these weapons was an MG42. I can stiill remember where this small pond is, I wonder who lives there now, and what excuse can I come up with for searching there pond?
Oh, I've remembered another good story. My Uncle Colin was brought up in a town in Essex. He and one of his friends were playing outside one day when they heard a dogfight overhead. Being young lads they rushed to see what was happening, and saw a Stuka crash land in some local woods. Without telling anyone where they were going, in their excitment they rushed off to this wood. After a while of searching they found the plane, large single bomb attached underneath, suspended from some trees. They got frightened that the bomb might explode and went back home to inform an adult. The police and locals combed the wood with my Uncle and his friend. Nothing was ever found. My Uncle was ridiculed for wasting everyones time. I believed his story, and one day I was chatting to a local man, who used to recover planes during the war. I told him my Uncles story, he confirmed that he had recovered the Stuka from said wood and scrapped it. At least my Uncle was happy that the truth had finally come out about his plane

Maybe you could use the excuse of searching for a rare type of pond life thats rumoured to live in that specific pond? If you're serious about having a look, I'll bring my rebreather and dry suit with me when I'm down south next month and check it out for you?

Danny, I had thought of the rare creature in the pond angle. Or, "your pond and house are contaminated, please move out while we decontaminate them for you". On a serious note, the pond is tiny, you wouldn't need any specialist equipment. Waders and a large rake should do the job. Just need to get permission from the land owners. It's not likely to happen as its a very expensive house, and the ponds in their garden. I know a similar house with a willy's jeep in their pond, and I've got a mate with lifting gear that only lives half a mile from that house. Rich house, landscaped garden, no chance that they want it ruined pulling out a 65 year old piece of rust out of thier ornamental pond

You never know, just because the land owners have a lot of money it doesnt mean that they wouldnt want people having a look? Maybe if you explain to them that you've heard the story and are just wanting to investigate and save a piece of history common sense will get the better of them? Or you could do them a deal, "if you let me have a look in your pond I'll give it a tidy up?" If theres weapons lying in the pond its worth at least asking
