Winter Camo Stahlhelme

Thought it would be a good idea to have a single thread to document all the Winter Camo versions of the German Stahlhelme that our members may have in their collection.

Would ask that you include the maker/size, lot number and any other pertinent information about the helmet in your post.

M40 Q64 Winter White Wash helmet. Lot # 8742.

Untypical re-enforced aluminum liner band in an M40 (typically it is steel). However liner band is dated 1940, sized 64 N.A / 56. Maker of leather and liner band is Metall Lederverarbeitung {Werner Zahn}, Berlin/Charlottenburg). Decal has flaked away over time.

From what I have been told this helmet was found in Estonia. Helmet has traces of sage green, bluish grey and maybe tan paint as well, both under and over the white wash. A helmet that had probably seen many seasons of fighting...

Next up is a very nice condition Winter camo relic. Maker and lot # unknown. But winter camo appears to be paint and not a white wash.

Was told this was dug in the "east"... no other information beyond that.

Good condition (although relic ground-dug) example of a Heer M35 or M40 helmet (too much paint around the rivets to be sure although probably M35 given the national decal remains). Size and maker is lost to corrosion, lot number is partially visible. Likely a 64 given the stamp on the 1940 dated liner band. Liner pins similarly dated 1940 and don't appear to have ever been replaced.

Supposedly found in a bunker excavation in the Demjansk area. The helmet displays remnants of the Heer eagle decal and signs of earlier wire banding for summer camouflage. Original liner remains but is heavily shrunken. Multiple layers of grey and white paint hint at numerous seasons in the front line.

The first is a WWII Q64 M35 double decal Luftwaffe that saw action in many theaters - there is Mediterranean tan camo paint under the winter whitewash. The second is a WWI Austrian M17, these are fairly hard to come by. Jim G.
