Shame, as it looks like an honest M40.
This is an M42 and yes better pics would be needed for an evaluation. Before buying a helmet always ask for good pictures and also get the stampings on the interior of the helmet, one is the lot number and the other is the manufacturer code and size stamp and are in the interior of the skirt. If the helmet has a liner also try to get the linerband date stamp as well.

I am not 100% sure the helmet is even WW2 from these pictures, the vent hole looks strange, perhaps it is an EF. Why would someone put a ratty old liner into a restored helmet?

    Anyway good thing you passed.

    Doug,

In the time honoured tradition that there is no such thing as a stupid question when dealing with abreviations, I will ask it. What is EF?

No stupid questions, only stupid answers!

EF is a helmet manufacturer stamping, meaning the helmet was manufactured by Emaillirwerk A.G., Fulda.

Other manufacturer stamps are ET (ckl for most M42), Q, NS and SE (hkp for most M42).

    Doug,

Many thanks, I have heard of all the others but not EF before. I must get a book.
