I know this is directed at Ben, and I don't mean to offend anyone by answering, but the buckle in post #3 is a cast fake. It's sold on several reenacting websites as a reproduction, but it's also widely sold as real. It's cast from an original buckle, so it's harder to spot than most fakes, and requires a 'gut feeling' more than anything else.
