what was the original finish on this ww2 buckle

Article about: ive purchased a buckle like the one in the pic(google image) its rusty and in a poor condition i wondered what finish they had when new , seems to maybe have remains of dark grey paint?

    Looks like a late war steel Heer buckle by Schmole & Comp, Menden. The paint colour looks like the "einsfarbe" late war blue. Bad pic to judge from though, any pics of the rear?

    its a pic i grabbed off google ...will get one of mine once its cleaned

    cant decide what to do with it , its mostly bare after derusting it

    maybe oil to keep it from more rusting?

    Could do, it would not harm it, I used gun oil on mine if they needed it

    I would be wary of using oil as it can creep under the paint making it loosen. It is fine as it is.

    If the buckle is as rusted as you say then IMO I would personally treat it with something, for me stop the condition from getting worse. If it is dry rust and you keep it in a dry area the condition of the buckle should not change. If you want post pics of the buckle when it arrives, at the end of the day its up to you
