    Dear Markus

    A super brace of HJ's.

Without appearing to be pedantic, the first buckle is I think Kriegsmetall rather than Zinc. Perhaps I am wrong from the images? Injection moulded "Kriegsmetall" and which is essentially a Zinc based alloy. These buckles were often painted or lacquered silver, silver/grey etc., however the chemical make up of the alloy soon caused this finish to disappear by leeching. On very rare occasions, Kriegsmetall buckles are seen with their original paint or lacquer finish intact. The second buckle however appears to be die stamped (and painted) Zinc.

    Regards,

    David

Lovely buckles indeed, and thanks for showing. I do have a soft spot for the stamped "zinc" buckles. There is one other manufacturer who made the HJ of stamped "zinc", but the name eludes me at the moment.

I should think all these buckles were made not of pure zinc, but of a zinc-based alloy, and thus might all be termed "Kriegsmetall". Even "aluminium" buckles are not made of 100% aluminium, but of an alloy. In period references, these are often referrred to as "Leichtmetall". Wim Saris published an article decades ago giving the exact composition of "Leichtmetall" as used by Assmann I believe. I suppose the composition would have varied over time.

    Best regards, Kurt

    Hello,

the material you means is often called zinc or zinc alloy .

It all means Kriegsmetall . In germany this Zink alloy had a special name :

    Feinzink .

Here's my stamped zinc Klein & Quenzer HJ. As I said, I have a soft spot for these. After selling most of my better HJ to a well-known HJ specialist collector and contributor to this forum, I nonetheless had to get this one when I saw it.

    Best regards, Kurt

    Hello All,

Very nice buckles shown here and some interesting metallurgical discussion. Attached here are my examples, including the other die-stamped zink buckle that Kurt alludes to, the maker being Werner Redo.

    Gruß,
    Adam
