Another way to learn the basics of aviation technology and aerodynamics (and one that doesn't come with the risk of its practitioners going AWOL) is by building and flying model airplanes. This, too, was among the activities the GST offered. Its Modellsportverband (MSV) [Model Sports Association] included sections for Flugmodellsport [Model Airplane Sports], Schiffsmodellsport [Model Ship Sports] and Automodellsport [Model Car Sports], all of which were quite popular.
The third model Flugmodellsportabzeichen [Airplane Model Sports Badge] as awarded from 1964 to the end of the GDR came in the same classes as the gilder badge (A, B, C and the silver and gold Leistungsabzeichen) and was of the same basic design except for the wings being replaced by stylized model airplane silhouettes. (There were equivalent badges for the Model Ship- and Model Car sections as well, bearing, respectively, the silhouettes of model ships and -cars. The model car badges were red, rather than blue like the other ones.)
