Some DDR badges

Article about: Normally, I do not collect East German items, but I have now dabbled a bit in GDR badges and thought I would share them here. Still quite cheap, the items seen below (except for the last one

Two little additions. (I have had them for a while, so it's high time I updated the thread.)

A nice, cased example of the Ehrennadel der Sozialistischen Einheitspartei Deutschlands für 40-jährige Mitgliedschaft in Arbeiterparteien [Honor Pin of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany for 40 years of Membership in Workers' Parties] (see post # 29).

This is the second model, with Stalin already absent but the pin still in larger size.

The other item is the Abzeichen für die freiwilligen Helfer der Deutschen Volkspolizei [Badge for the Volunteer Helpers of the German Peoples' Police]. The Freiwillige Helfer der DVP ["FH" for short] were a volunteer corps of civilian police auxiliaries, supporting all branches of the police in a wide variety of responsibilities in the field of public safety and security. The organisation more or less ceased its activities in mid-1990 and was officially disbanded on 30 September 1990 (i.e. three days before the DDR ceased to exist).

Worn on the left lapel of civilian clothing, this pin was not a mere identification-/membership badge, but actually in the nature of an award. It was bestowed for special achievements and presented with an award certificate.

Here's an equivalent to the last badge. This is the Abzeichen für die freiwilligen Helfer der Grenztruppen der DDR [Badge for the Volunteer Helpers of the Border Troops of the GDR]. Like the Volkspolizei, the Grenztruppen had their own volunteer corps of civilian auxiliaries. The organisation was founded on 5 June 1958 as the Freiwilligen Helfer zur Unterstützung der Grenzpolizei [Volunteer Helpers for the Support of the Border Police] and was officially disbanded at 2400 hrs. on 2 October 1990 (i.e. when the GDR ceased to exist).

Instituted on 8 April 1983 by the Minister of National Defence, Armeegeneral Heinz Hoffmann, the badge was worn on the left lapel of civilian clothing.

Aviation sports in the GDR were mainly undertaken as part of the pre-military training for the air arm of the NVA and closely monitored by the authorities (due to the potential of flight in both senses of the term...). This included powered and unpowered flight as well as parachuting.

Here are some qualification badges for glider pilots. The first model of gliding badge as awarded from 1952 to 1965 (not pictured here) had an outer border with the slogan "BEREIT ZUR ARBEIT UND ZUR VERTEIDIGUNG DES FRIEDENS" ["READY FOR LABOR AND THE DEFENSE OF PEACE"], which was omitted from the later badges. Otherwise, the badges followed the usual design and grade system used the world over, with the letters "DDR" identifying their country of origin.

From left to right: The Segelflugabzeichen Stufe A, Stufe B and Stufe C [Gliding Badge Grade A, Grade B and Grade C], the Internationales Leistungsabzeichen in Silber [FAI Badge in Slver] full size and as a miniature stickpin:

Another way to learn the basics of aviation technology and aerodynamics (and one that doesn't come with the risk of its practitioners going AWOL) is by building and flying model airplanes. This, too, was among the activities the GST offered. Its Modellsportverband (MSV) [Model Sports Association] included sections for Flugmodellsport [Model Airplane Sports], Schiffsmodellsport [Model Ship Sports] and Automodellsport [Model Car Sports], all of which were quite popular.

The third model Flugmodellsportabzeichen [Airplane Model Sports Badge] as awarded from 1964 to the end of the GDR came in the same classes as the gilder badge (A, B, C and the silver and gold Leistungsabzeichen) and was of the same basic design except for the wings being replaced by stylized model airplane silhouettes. (There were equivalent badges for the Model Ship- and Model Car sections as well, bearing, respectively, the silhouettes of model ships and -cars. The model car badges were red, rather than blue like the other ones.)

Top row: All five grades, bottom row: variant badges for the A and gold grade and a miniature for the C grade:

I just got myself examples for the first model gliding badge (1952 to 1965, see post # 35) as well.

The first model badges were always enamelled, had a screwback attachment and were of good quality. (They also came in a cloth version for wear on flight jackets/-coveralls. Today, these are rarer and more expensive than the metal badges.)

Reverse view without the screwback discs. The "A" grade badge has a plaque with the award number 08285. Badges with embossed award numbers are also known:
