This is another sword found in my father in law's attic. He was a US Army officer in Europe and Germany throughout WW2. There are no markings on the blade, only decor is on the grip, pommel and cross guard. The scabbard is mental. Also I do not know the purpose of the piece of material on the scabbard?
I greatly appreciate any and all the help in identifying this sword.
    Thank you,
    Steve

Not an expert but I believe it's an early US Militia sword.

Any kind of markings on the ricasso ? this may help decide which forum to send it to for further study.

I agree. A mid to late 19th century US Militia NCO sword. In design it's very similar to the various fraternal society swords but easily contrasted by the existence of national symbols.
