As already stated, it is quite common to encounter black class badges with all of their black paint worn off. It chipped off quite easily. You can even see this in some period photographs.
Here's one of mine, almost entirely stripped of paint. Personally, I quite like the look of these early brass badges. The wear really makes the details jump out at you.
