Now that I am really looking at it, around the insignia in the back, you can see what to me look like some scrubbing marks.

..and thank you administration for changing the thread name to the correct German.
You are absolutely right, the badge has been scrubbed to remove the black paint. I didn't think it was naturally worn off. I wouldn't be at all surprised if it was done with the intention of selling it at gold badge prices.

Looking for LDO marked EK2s and items relating to U-406.....

Fortunately I didn't pay too much for it. Sometimes I can catch a break.
    Thanks cat.

Would any of you paint it black again...or just leave it alone?

I vote for leaving it alone............ the damage has been done, so no point making it worse and believe me, it will never look right again.

    Definitely leave it alone, SCB.........!

I too would never pay the price of a 'gold badge' for one of these.
You can sometimes find them cheaper than normal black badges
    because the finish is gone!

In a once popular 1970's 'Bender' publication there is mention of early gold
badges being hollow-backed, but this too was only supposition/rumour.

I think this idea came about because of the same type of information that
CricketChris has already stated through personal contact with his Veteran,
that hollow tombak badges - void of their black finish - were used in place
of golden awards in some instances, late in the war. It makes sense
regarding these 'rumors', and the fact that these badges
really would appear 'gold' in wear.

We must not forget that the German war machine was stretched to the limits
towards the end and they were 'making do' with whatever they had !
