    It is a rub mark of some sort. I don't know what caused it.

    Some idiot in the past "testing" to see if the badge is tombak or zinc, an unfortunate and regular occurrence that still occasionally happens. Nice badge though.

    Looks good but better photos would be nice. As mentioned above by Ned, the scratching is quite common as seen in my own example which I put down to someone wanting to test if the badge was 'real' gold.

    This mutilation happens to a lot of items that end up at
    scrap dealers or pawn shops. No concern with the
    historic value whatsoever - only the monetary.

    Nice '30' with a variation pin......... !
