Re: Verwundetenabzeichen Silver or Gold?
Well there's obviously something not quite right with the swastika. Is it an attempt at de-nazification? Is the swastika a replacement? I'm guessing if someone tried to de-nazify the badge they could grind it off quite easily from the top down without bothering to scratch out between the arms or round off the inner edges of it. Why is the rest of the helmet scratched? Has the helmet had a coat of silver paint to try and cover it up?
Looking for LDO marked EK2s and items relating to U-406.....

Yes, maybe a half-hearted attempt at de-nazification

Either that or an attempt at replacing a swastika on a denazified badge? Swastika does not appear symmetrical.

Re: Verwundetenabzeichen Silver or Gold?
I think that if the symbol has been rebuilt to be in the same material of manufacture, as I think I see rare silver below you can see the original color gold.
But also I think the round shape of the swastika is a little odd.
In my opinion is an attempt to de-Nazification, for shallow scratches on both the swastika in the surrounding area and the laurels of the edges, but it is my humble opinion.
