Hi guys, also the zinc badges and medals like KVKs loose their finish leaving behind a grey piece of metal. The finish on tombak can last longer but when it's off it leaves behind a brown/yellowish color.
Check this photos: 1st one is a zinc material. 2nd is tombak with no finish on it, 3rd a tombak with it's finish.
Of course correct my friend, but I felt this was rather too obvious to mention, as tombak (a brass alloy of copper and zink, where the copper content is at least 75%) will of course look much like reddish bronze, whereas feinzink will of course display a darker greyish colour. My answer was trying to address the situation where you have two badges of a darker greyish colour, how to know which is made of zink/feinzink and not some other alloy (as asked by the threadstarter). But one can't have too much information they say

That's wow Janos. Even though some details are not very crispy the material makes this badge a shinning beauty. Do you have it in your collection?

Re: AS Marked Panzerkampfabzeinche
Well guys I learned a good lesson with this badge and an expensive one. The more I study it and compare it to the badges listed in Philippe De Bock's book and the badge that János posted I can clearly see that it combines details from both the 1st and 2nd pattern.
János and donkihotis7 thanks for taking time to share all the photos. It really helps have some visual aids.
I guess Ill sell it for what it is to recover a few bucks and be a little smarter next time.
Thanks everyone
Kirby
