Ralph's nailed it. It's a Staegemaier copy first seen around 2007-8, and is known as the "üü" fake. It's pretty good as these things go, but careful examination shows up the problems already mentioned, including various flaws, especially on the reverse side. Here's a silver example of the same badge from Staegemaier's catalogue.

At least on these photos you can see there is no lily pad hinge either.

    Hi Ralph,

Weidmann did make 2 variant set ups late on that had a hinge like the one shown here, they are known as the "Wraparound hinge A" and the smaller but similar "hinge B" which as it says, was a sheet metal wraparound type rather than the common "Classic" set up featuring the lily pad hinge that is seen on many Weidmann badges and awards.

An interesting point on this Staegemaier fake is to be seen when you examine the wreath band at the bottom. Both of the above examples are worn away in an identical manner. That would not be seen on any 2 different badges unless they came from a mold that was made using an already worn badge as the master. Herr Staegemaier slipped up here instead of using a genuine badge that was not worn in this manner as his master, and for that we can be thankful.

    Regards, Ned.
