Thank you for posting these new photos, I was obviously covered in some kind of crud.

However, as a general note to all, please please please don't think about washing your pieces unless you know exactly what you're doing.

A bowl full of hot soapy water, a scrubbing brush and a pair of marigolds may seem like the perfect way to breath life back into your awards.

    It won't.

Old awards with old finish remaining coupled with today's harsh cleaning chemicals and a bucket full of enthusiasm will strip and ruin a piece of history in no time at all.

IF and only IF your piece MAY need cleaning - post it here for advice first. You may start of with a dirty badge but with finish still there, wash it and just be left with a hunk of grey zinc. Never clean for the sake of it and always get opinions first!!!!!

Looking for LDO marked EK2s and items relating to U-406.....

I gave it a Vaseline wash, I heard it worked quite well on zinc medals, and this PAB desperately needed it. And since most of the finish was gone I figured I probably wouldn't hurt it much lol

As long as that's all you did, no harm done.

A vaseline wash? How does that work, just wipe it on and then off again?

I believe you are correct sir. I know there is a thread on here with a step by step, but can't locate it at this time.

Basically yes, Glenn. Give the badge a nice coating of vaseline, leave for a day and wipe off the excess, leaving a light coating remaining.
