any evidence of a copper under-coating on this one?

I think it's zinc with a cupal coating or wash. Stewy

Hi Stewy,
Cupal is not a coating or a wash in the sense I think you mean. It's actually a metal product consisting of an aluminium centre sheet that's overlaid either on one or both sides, depending, with a very thin layer of copper, by a process called cold rolling, making a sandwich of sorts. The copper is applied to the aluminium because you can't solder to it directly otherwise as it has what's known as a passivating surface, the copper negates this.
The zinc badges would have been copper plated by electro plating, and would again allow for easier soldering as well as vastly improving the quality and longevity of the finish.
On a side note, I have a hollow cupal Panzerkampf Abzeichen in bronze by Assmann wending it's way to Casa Ned as we speak, and i'll post it when it get's here, as it's a pretty rare bird, in fact i've only seen one other posted on here this time last year, and even then the guy never went back to the vendor and bought it as far as I recall. I'm just hoping it's genuine considering it was a bit of a steal!
Regards, Ned.

Thanks for putting me right Ned. Look forward to seeing the new PKA. Stewy
