    Good one for sure.
    Can't say about the catch.

Original badge no question. I think this is by an unknown manufacturer and known as the 'broken stem' variant. Here is one of mine for comparison.
If I'm wrong, Stewy or fischer will be along to tidy up the pieces!

Thanks Steve & Adrian. What sort of value would you place on this badge?

Original Broken Stem indeed. It could be a wartime repair, but we can't say it for sure. The badge doesn't worth too much, its a very common variant and this one is in a bad condition.

The catch certainly looks like it's been there a long time, how long though is impossible to say and anyone's guess!

    Hi Tom

It's been a while, I hope this finds you well!

I agree with the others, an unknown variant referred to as the Broken Stem. Adrian has posted a nice one to compare and as we can see with his example; the catch can be an IAB's "Achilles Heal". As Janos states, this variant is relatively common when compared to most of the other examples and when the catch was repaired is anyone's guess. With so much dirt still attached, my opinion would be this is a recent recovery from the ground. One thing I find strange, I would think the zinc would have pitted up more than this one shows especially since dirt has dried and stuck to the catch and hinge areas. This one could have been buried intentionally, giving the appearance of a war time repair or it could be a legit ground dug original with a period repair? Unless the price is very attractive, I would pass and search for another.

    Best Regards, fischer
