I guess you use another light source, not the camera flash?

Yes, I use a flourescent light overhead, sometimes with cheesecloth draped below it. I do a test photo without the cheesecloth, if it has too much glare, I suspend the cloth below it.

Ah! A diffuser, good technique! What camera do you use?
I've picked up a Nikon D3100 DSLR and my little pocket point-and-shoot gives better results than the all singing all dancing confusing buttons everywhere Nikon monster.
