Hi Tony
This one is an original unmarked Ernst Müller example and like you state, poor storage has caused the white powdery residue and pitting on the surface of the zinc.
In order to slow down the process of this one turning to zinc dust, I would recommend the following.
1. I would lightly coat the badge completely with Vaseline and let it set for a day or two.
2. Wash the badge with soap and water ( I use Ivory soap).
3. Dry the badge completely (I like to use a hair dryer).
Storage as you know was the cause and keeping it away from moisture and humid conditions is key.
