What's the issue with the ribbons Ade?
What's the issue with the ribbons Ade?
Hi Glenn, both are identical and both are badly folded.
Cheers, Ade.
Hi Ade, I see what you mean about the folding. In my KVK collection below I have mint, unissued ribbons as you can see. Now if I had a few sherbets under my belt and was silly enough to attempt to fold them up i could easily mess the job up too but it doesn't make the ribbon a repo.
I've read that original ribbon (apart from the black light test and the ash test) should show a particular pattern at the edge of the ribbon. The horizontal thread should return 180 degrees on itself? I hope i've explained that clearly. Can you offer any more clues to ribbon authentication?
Cheers
Glenn
Hi Glenn, I cannot add much more, you have it covered.
Cheers, Ade.
Thanks again Ade,
So to sum up ribbon authentication:
1) Black light test, nothing should glow.
2) Burn a thread, it should ash not melt.
3) The horizontal thread should turn 180 degrees on itself at the edge of the ribbon.
4) It should smell old ( I sniffed my ribbons and they do smell like musty old Rayon)
Cheers
Glenn
I have done the test today. I wouldn't call it ash. The original-silk ones are burning leaving a soft charcoal edge. It's soft and brakes into pieces when you press it.
Looking for the photo albums of Leutnant Emil Freitag, 3. / G.R. 377
I agree with Ade on the ribbons being replaced,
although they could be original NOS.
The other items also look good to me.
