Thank you both!
Is there any other reliable way of determining authenticity of the ribbon that doesn't involve burning pieces of it?

You can do the black light test.
Which is not 100% reliable. If an item has been washed with modern detergents, it will glow.

The medal and ribbon are original...no worries.
Let's be a bit careful with the advice we give to our new collector friends...I've never had to burn anything to find out if it's real, lol...
cheers, Glenn

I told him the both were good, I'm sorry I should have worded my thoughts better.

IF its syntethic it will stink and burn plastic-like; if its original it will burn with orange flame and smell "pure" like normal paper.
