    Keep in mind that these were worn in combat and for years afterwards for parades, meetings, and even for free/discounted rides on buses and trolleys by veterans.

    I have a couple with similar damage. I really like them. As Richie said would have been worn in combat and post war.

    A Red Star in this number range is not likely to have been worn in battle. It was awarded after May 1945. But, of course, one can know for sure only after research.
    The damage appears to me to be recent (compare to the moment when it was awarded to the veteran). The silver in the exposed areas appears to be lighter - less oxidation.
