What a nice piece with a beautiful patina. May I ask what he did to deserve the decoration?

Isn´t it the star of "Hero of the Soviet Union" a medal given for outstanding bravery in battle?

    Hi,

It's the Order of the Red Star. You should find the requirements needed to award this order online.

I attached a photo, of what the Star of Hero of the Soviet Union looked like. Only 11,635 awarded during the Great Patriotic War.

What a great thing to have-a Red Star issued during WWII to your own Grandfather! Have you researched the circumstances of it's issuance?
