    HI Ade, This award comes some way before the recognised start of long services awards, this being number 659503 and as you stated the 1944 long service awards are normally in the range 848000 - 1 000 000.

    Red Stars began to be issued for 15 years Long service in this serial number range in 1944: roughly numbers 848,000 to 1,000,000. So yours is early.
