Thank you for posting this one, Roger. I like these long-service awards as much as the combat service awardings.

Some have suggested a softening of the standards, a lowering of the bar if you will, for these awards, over time, meaning too they are somehow less desirable to us as collectors, but I disagree. I think it's really a case of apples and oranges, Red Stars being awarded for two totally different types of services, and a concomitant evolution in the thinking of Soviet Higher Command towards the bestowing of these awards

As the war dragged on I think there was a recognition on some level of the significance of the foot soldier and the scientist. I see this particular Red Star representing this Colonel's life time of technical service in the Red Army. His efforts effected others, his comrades, and enabled the Soviet Army to persevere. To discount these long- service awards as being some how less than earlier awarded Red Stars misses the point. It does a profound disservice to the efforts of so many, for so long, who all contributed significantly in ways far removed from the front lines. This Red Star is symbol of that that recognition, as I see it.

    Sorry, rave over. . .

Thanks for your comments, Bill. You are right. The efforts of men like this enabled the folks at the sharp end to get their job done.

    Nice one!

So on citations belonging to Long Service Red Stars, there is nothing writtn under the "Short, concrete description of the personal combat feat or merits:" section?

No, there was a citation there (but only for wartime long service awards), but they were often quite generic and just focusing on the officer's qualities and previous achievements.

    See for example:

    Ivan Konstantinovich Misyura
    Aleksandra Georgiyevna Verzhbilovskaya
