Short description of personal combat feat or accomplishment

Comrade Shumkin has continuously excelled with exceptional steadfastness, valor, and bravery in combat against the German-Romanian invaders. On the night of 14th-15th May, 1944 Comrade Shumkin received the mission to capture an enemy for interrogation and determine the enemy’s defensive system. He and a group of scouts penetrated the enemy’s front lines far into his rear area. Acting boldly and decisively, he attacked a group of Hitlerites and in a quick engagement destroyed 15 soldiers and captured an officer whom he delivered back to the division headquarters. As a result of this bold operation the enemy measures, defensive system, and disposition of firing positions were determined. This bold and decisive operation had a significant influence on the course of the battle to our advantage.

On 17th July, 1944 Comrade Shumkin again infiltrated into the enemy rear area with a group of soldiers. Crossing a river obstacle he penetrated into the enemy lair unnoticed, and by his decisive actions drove the enemy from his trench, captured a prisoner, destroyed more than 20 Hitlerites, captured two machineguns, and destroyed two bunkers. All of Comrade Shumkin’s fearless and bold actions enabled the division’s command to fully determine the enemy situation and determine the enemy’s defensive measures.

Signed Commander, 301st Independent Reconnaissance Company, Lieutenant Goldinov

Endorsed Division Intelligence Officer, Captain Volodin on (?) July, 1944
