It gives info on different types of the ORS, including serial numbers. Good page!

I have 4 ORS as follows: (with award dates)

    804,390: Sept 1944
    1,026,349: Oct 1944
    1,752,810: Apr 1945
    3,280,341: Nov 1954 (Long Service)

    Happy collecting

Yes the higher the number the greater the chance it is for long service. I was talking to a guy recently (Oleg from the CollectRussia website) who told me that Red Stars >500,000 are almost always long service. He said it's a real crap shoot, and finding one for bravery is like looking for a particular needle in a stack of needles.
That's not really accurate. On my website I have long service award serial numbers ranges for among others the Red Star, and one is usually "safe" under the 848,000 and between the 1,000,000 and 2,700,000: Soviet long service awards (1944–1957)

I should add, though, that there are large "grey areas" between the serial number ranges, but a RS in the early 2 mil range is most likely a real combat award.

Thanks for the info Auke, some interesting reading. So it maybe a possibility that this star was for more than just long service , which is good to know.
