Hi Ben, the yellow braid loops will be for Kompanie designation. This was an unofficial practise used by many units, not just Panzer.
Enclosed is a pic of a shoulder strap from my collection.
Use of this was not exclusive to the Heer: even the British Army's 1st battl, The Border Regt did it. Just a quick and easy way to show who was who and it helped build esprit de coprs.

I have a weak memory, as you already know, but i remember that we have a photo of the same French knocked out tank just in different angle. Your grandpa had taken that picture so maybe we talked more about him back then?
