If anyone will find an original one (WW 2), wouldn't mind if its photos would pop up here .

Polish Podhale (highlander) units also have traditionally used the edelweiss device as a symbol for quite a while now. Some times they'll pop up for sale and will be a bit confusing to one who may suspect that it's German. Curiously enough, pre-war Polish Podhale units also used the swastika as a symbol...swastikas and edelweisses..who would have ever thought!
The Austrian Alpine Club badge is an edelweiss similar to the military badge but with the initials OE.A.V. in the middle (which is gilt).

An example of the form of edelweiss worn by Heer Gebergsjaeger units. This is shown only for the insignia. The cap is a reproduction and not mine.

Sorry for resurrecting this thread but thought I'd post my German-Austrian Alpine Club pin to grow the body of knowledge about edelweiss pins that are not military.
You can see that as PatGore said the center was (and still partly is) gilt.
Here's a web page that describes the history of the various mountain clubs, some of the anti-Semitic club policies and (from the translated page)
In 1938 the Alpine Club, incorporated now only German Alpine Club (DAV), as "Mountaineering Association" in the National Socialist Reich League for Physical Exercise and Seyss-Inquart to the "leader of the German Alpine Club (DAV)" ordered.
So I guess there is a tie with the Third Reich after all.

Update 04-04-2010.
Looking through the thread on Karelia/ SS Nord Division battlefield relics and saw an edelweiss relic with DAV (so Deutscher Alpenverin?) club initials in the post here:

Perhaps some SS Nord officers or other personnel also came the alpine region of Austria/Germany and would have carried mementos with them.
