I agree with Fred. I can see no reason why anybody would have wanted to reproduce the specialist patches for the immediate post war market. No doubt there were tons of originals laying around. A re-enactor dealer did make some limited reproductions in the early 2000s. Others have made repros since then but they are generally easy to spot. There seems to be quite a variety of quality among the original specialist patches. My collection includes examples with no backing and some with backing. NH

    Hello,

Here are some backs of original specialty patches that I have on hand. Some use a net/cheese cloth type backing but I am very comfortable with them.

    Hello,

These might be what you are talking about. Patch King had been making replacement patches for WWI vets in the 20's and 30's. They had contracts for US patches during WWII. They also started making reproduction German patches just before the war ended. Here are a few examples. The cheese cloth backing is quite pronounced and it is the same on the German and US patches. I believe that they kept selling patches into the 1960's.

Yes Fred - those are what I meant.
Often seen mixed up with others and sold as original ( as this one is )

So we stay clear of them.... thanks!

    Cheers, Dan
