Got this today. It is silver wire thread which concerns me in that it does not have the same design as on my Obergefreiter patch. The backing material is grey and not field grey. I should add that the colour is not as dark as in the photo. Could anyone please shed any light on this? Is it a WW2 era piece? Thank you.

Hello,
The tresses is the Luftwaffe type used until the end of the war. It was also used prewar by the Heer, but was discontinued for the new type. IMO some pix in daylight might help...
