Glass Kriegsmarine buttons

I am sure some of you will have seen buttons like this before, but I never have and thought they were sufficiently different to post a few pictures of them. They were kindly given to me by a visitor to my museum. I believe they were dug up with many others in the Sangatte area prior to the Channel tunnel be completed. I am sure all sorts would have been found in the area but these are a first for me, and although a little chipped in places I do like them.

Very strange. Seems like a poor choice of material when these would have taken day to day abuse. I guess they would prevent rusting haha.

I am really surprised that more people have not come back and said they are really common. As you say a strange material to use.

I believe that preventing rust and corrosion, as well
as keeping costs down - plus eliminating the use
of crucial war material ( ie brass ) - is exactly
why these were produced in glass. I have
not seen any with all the finish intact.
