I've heard stories by vets who handled prisoner captures and detainment. They said that they made the prisoners remove the pockets to avoid their being able to hide things(like weapons, etc) in them. Having said that, I've also heard of pockets being removed to provide material for repairing holes and tears in p.o.w.'s uniforms in camps.

I agree, modified for postwar use...Clothing was scarce in the immediate postwar period, and folks had to use what was available at the time...
We've seen RAD tunics and BdM Climbing Jackets modified for postwar wear here on the Forum before as well...You'd probably have a hard time finding material that matches this tunic's color, in my opinion...any restoration would probably be quite noticeable...
    cheers, Glenn
