I got this armband at an auction and wonder if it is authentic. The description said it was for civilian use, but some internet searching said it was used to identify shot-down pilots.
A shot down pilot would be in uniform so that theory is bogus. It is always amazing what type of made up theories are purported to be fact. This was used by civilian employees of the Luftwaffe. From the images, it appears to be genuine.

That's true.
Some great work by the forum member HPL 2008 that gives the orders for aircrew to wear them.
