If you shoot pics of the threads on the inside flap of the tunic....or if you can see any additional holes or pieces of thread on the inside. also, is all of it black ? Or are some buttons stitched with different colored thread ?
I'll take a look and upload some better pictures in a few minutes

Looks like all 4 chest buttons are stitched the same, heres some more pictures:

I find it interesting how the bottom button is centered while the top 3, espically the middle too, are sewn so close to the edge. I don't see much on the reverse either so I'm a little confused with this one

    Hmmm... not sure about those.

I have one tunic in my collection where the buttons were moved... because the guy gained weight!

However, they definitely appear to have been moved long ago and are nicely stitched, which leads me to be comfortable with it.

Any idea why the buttons would be sewn on so crooked?

    Hi,
As TWS pointed out, weight gain is probably the reason... or maybe it was worn by a fat re-enactor.
No self respecting tailor would produce a garment like that.
Whenever the alteration was made, it's still a fine tunic and nothing to worry about.
If you look really closely, perhaps even with a magnifying glass, you should find the original stitch holes. I would be inclined to put them back, but that's up to you.
Well done and very best wishes,
    Bob
