Any Royal cypher and date on the blade spine? It appears to be plated, which may have been post WW2. As for S.P.H.E. mark I wonder whether it's a Schutzpolizei region/district mark.
Hello,
I have 2 main problems with the piece:
1. it was completely plated. As a piece of memory or souvenir.
2. The letters of the D stamp are very large. There are no numeral stamps.
So far, I do not see a direct connection to the police. Rather a fragmentary later troop stamp from the 1WW.
These troop stamps are difficult or even impossible to interpret today. S. P. I consider a headlight train of a pioneer batallion (Scheinwerferzug Pionierbatallion). E possibly "Ersatz". H possibly for "Hessische" (=Pionier-Bataillon Nr. 11).
Hello
Thanks for your comments.
There are imperial cyphers ont spine of the blade and W16.
I know it is not uncommon to find WWI bayonets which have been nickel plated during Weimar era. I don't know if this marking is from WWI or Weimar era ?
Alain
The bayonet has Imperial acceptance mark from 1916, so the nickel plating (or is it chrome) is likely to be post war, and probably was a souvenir captured during WW1, if not WW2. Sleepwalker's interpretation sets the marks as WW1 era, and not Weimar period. Also it's not a private purchase bayonet, and those were nickel plated.
Bayonet was upgraded to NCO dress version postwar, in front of S could be digit 1? , the explanation of unit could be real, but too wrong as many new units raised in WW1. b.r.Andy
